January 27 is day of remembrance to mark the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp where more than one million people died in the gas chambers during the Holocaust. More than six million Jews were systemically persecuted and murdered by the Nazi regime and its allies and collaborators between 1933 and 1945. The day was designated as International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust by the United Nations General Assembly in 2005.

Each year, Canadians join with nations from around the world to remember the victims of the Holocaust and reflect on the dangers of anti-Semitism.
