March marks a time to celebrate an extraordinary profession that touches lives in countless ways. From March 3 to 9, we recognize Social Work Week in Ontario, while across Canada, March is celebrated as National Social Work Month. This year’s theme, "Wherever You Are, #SoAreWe," highlights the essential role social workers play in providing care, no matter the place or circumstance.
Wherever you are, so are we.
As the largest group of mental health professionals in the province, social workers meet Ontarians where they’re at—emotionally, physically, and mentally—offering unwavering support through life’s complexities and challenges. In schools, hospitals, community centers, and beyond, they are there, providing expert guidance and compassionate care.
Opening doors for students every day
Within the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board, our dedicated team of school social workers embodies this year’s theme, meeting students and families where they are and ensuring access to the right supports. They walk alongside those they serve, advocating, guiding, and opening doors to new opportunities within both the school and the community.
Whether it's helping a student navigate mental health challenges, connecting families with essential resources, or providing a safe space to talk, social workers in our schools make a difference when it matters most.
"Our HWCDSB social workers are tireless in their commitment to students and families," says Jenny Athanasiou-Malisa, Manager of Social Work Services. "They meet individuals in their moments of need, offering expertise, empathy, and unwavering support. Their dedication strengthens our school communities and truly reflects the spirit of Catholic education. We are blessed to have such compassionate professionals in our system."
"Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies." – Mother Teresa
During Social Work Week, the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board extends its heartfelt gratitude to our 20 school social workers for the invaluable impact they make each day. Your work does not go unnoticed, and we are truly blessed by your presence in our schools.
