Wednesday, April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day, a day dedicated to raising public awareness by recognizing individuals around the globe living with Autism Spectrum Disorder including our own family members, friends, neighbours, classmates and colleagues.

According to the 2019 Canadian Health Survey on Children and Youth (CHSCY), 1 in 50 (or 2.0%) Canadian children and youth aged 1 to 17 years were diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Acknowledging the hurdles that people with autism and others who live with autism face every day, Pope Francis said, “Everyone should be committed to promoting acceptance…and solidarity through concrete support and by encouraging renewed hope.”

HWCDSB will be celebrating with school communities on this day with a system-wide “Prayer for Autism” during morning announcements. Some schools will also be “lighting it up blue” in support of the Hamilton Chapter of Autism Awareness.

See here for more information.

On Saturday, April 26, all are welcome to celebrate the Autism community at a FREE family carnival taking place at the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (20 Education Court). The event will run from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and will take place rain or shine. No registration required. Pizza will be available for purchase.
