The recent release of the Netflix series, 13 Reasons Why, has prompted concern from mental health professionals and the educational community. Based on a fictional, young adult novel, the series depicts events leading to the death by suicide of a young character. While the series may not pose risks for most students, it has the potential for harm for students who may be struggling with a mental health problem and/or suicidal ideation. The attached pdf offers suggestions recommended by School Mental Health ASSIST in order to help parents/guardians approach conversations with their children in an informed, balanced, and supportive manner.
