March 23 is School Crossing Guard Appreciation Day in Ontario. The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board joins communities and families across the province in celebrating and recognizing our school crossing guards who daily help our students with their active and safe travel to and from school.

Women and STEM make up “one quarter of the people employed in STEM careers and less than one fifth of the nuclear sector’s workforce” (Commission, 2024), so what can we do in education to promote more girls in STEM?

Expanding upon the extremely successful pilot project, nine new students were welcomed into the Building a Strong Foundation program last month. A partnership between the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board and UBC Local 18, co-op students are provided with an exciting pathway into skilled trades, specifically in carpentry.

This annual event is for parents, guardians and students with special needs (ages 14-21) who are in the process of planning for life after high school. Freely connect and network with various local organizations that provide funding, advocacy and supports, continuing education, employment, recreation, respite, and much more!

March 21 is World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), and to raise awareness and celebrate inclusion, students and staff throughout the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board are encouraged to wear fun, colourful, and mismatched socks on Thursday, March 21st as part of the global #LotsOfSocks campaign.

By Larry Moko. The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic Athletic Association will be represented by two teams at this week's OFSAA boys' hockey championships. At the AAA level in Windsor, the Bishop Ryan Celtics are seeded ninth among the 16 high school squads vying for the tournament title. And in Sudbury, the St. Mary Crusaders have qualified in the A/AA division. St. Mary is ranked 12th in that 16-team field. Both competitions run from March 18-20.

Friends our Gospel for the Second Sunday of Lent this year is Luke’s account of the Transfiguration. And it opens up something that is marvelous and confounding; there is sort of an aching and a longing associated with this text. It speaks to us of these moments when reality becomes incandescent or transparent to something more—something that lies beyond our ordinary experience.

On February 22, 2025, the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board proudly hosted the 42nd Annual HWCDSB System Science and Engineering Fair (SSEF) at Bishop Ryan Catholic Secondary School. This annual event highlights our Catholic school system’s commitment to excellence and the dedication, creativity, and scientific knowledge of students in Grades 4 to 12. This year’s fair showcased the innovative work of students in Grades 4 to 8, who with the encouragement and support of their teachers, spent months exploring complex questions, designing experiments and engineering solutions.
