A new inclusive model implemented at the Jeanne Scott Parent and Child Resource Centre is ensuring all young parents have access to education and support. In partnership with the Good Shepherd Centres Hamilton, the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board operates the Jeanne Scott Parent & Child Resource Centre, an adult credit school for young parents aged 18-25 who are working towards completing their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).

By Larry Moko. For the first time in his life, Jim Daly climbed the ladder and clipped a string off the net to celebrate one of his basketball team’s championship performances. The scene was Cathedral High School Saturday afternoon and the Gaels had just defeated the St. John Henry Newman Cardinals 81-43 to capture the 2023 OFSAA girls’ AAA title.

By Larry Moko. A large dose of Daly was too strong for the Pickering Trojans to handle. Veteran guard Keira Daly poured in a career-high 45 points to lead the top-seeded Cathedral Gaels to a 75-51 semifinal victory over the No. 5 seeds from Pickering at the OFSAA girls’ AAA basketball tournament Friday. That outcome, along with St. John Henry Newman’s 46-42 triumph over Sarnia’s second-seeded St. Patrick’s Fighting Irish, sets up an all-Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic championship Saturday.

Gaels and Cardinals looking to place at OFSAA

By Larry Moko Both Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic entries won a pair of games Thursday to reach the quarter-final round of the 2023 OFSAA girls’ AAA basketball tournament. The top-seeded Cathedral Gaels defeated the St. Peter Saints of Peterborough, 74-24, and then followed that up with a 76-24 decision over Sault Ste. Marie’s Korah Collegiate Colts. As for the sixth-seeded St. John Henry Newman Cardinals, they got past Korah, 44-34, and St. Peter, 51-33.

By Larry Moko. The Cathedral Gaels are riding an 85-game winning streak as they shoot for a third-consecutive Ontario girls’ high school basketball championship on their home court this week. The Gaels captured the last two OFSAA titles in St. Catharines and Windsor, respectively. This year’s 16-team AAA tournament gets under way Thursday, with action at both the Cathedral and St. Thomas More gyms.

Then, in March, regardless whether the Cardinals qualify for the OFSAA championship in Belle River, the Newman team has planned a trip to Hawaii for a volleyball tournament.

Math teacher by day, world karate champion by night. Last month, Andrew Cabilan, teacher at St. Jean de Brébeuf Catholic Secondary School, competed at the World Karate Union World Championships in Calgary, Alberta where he took home three gold medals and a bronze medal in the Traditional Forms categories. He also made the distinction of being the only adult male Canadian to win gold medals in Forms during the competition.

In 2022, the St. John Henry Newman Cardinals defeated the St. Thomas More Knights both times during the regular season before losing to them at home in a semifinal playoff. This year, however, it was More that swept a pair of games from Newman during the regular schedule. And Monday night, at More, the visiting Cardinals downed the Knights, 53-45, in semifinal action.

By Larry Moko. The St. John Henry Newman Cardinals ‘blew past’ their opponent to open the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic high school football playoffs. On a wind-swept afternoon, the second-place Cardinals defeated the third-place St. Thomas More Knights, 26-5, in a senior semifinal Friday. In the other semifinal, the first-place Bishop Tonnos Titans topped the fourth-place Bishop Ryan Celtics, 51-13.

That provincial high school competition was held Saturday at Etobicoke’s Centennial Park. About 1,400 student-athletes took park in boys’ and girls’ novice, junior, senior and para divisions.

Chloe Seiler won the 6-kilometre event at Campbellville’s Hilton Falls Conservation Area in 26 minutes, 2 seconds. And seven seconds behind in second place was her Titans teammate, Clara Fava.
